What is a Right of Way?

A pipeline right of way is a strip of land where a pipeline is located. These corridors are typically clear of trees, buildings, and other structures, and are marked with visible signage to indicate the presence of underground infrastructure. Maintaining these areas provides the ability to visually monitor threats to the pipeline and allows for quick emergency access.

Why We Inspect

Right-of-Way inspections help us:

  • Detect and prevent unauthorized excavation
  • Monitor for signs of erosion, leaks, or encroachments
  • Ensure compliance with federal and state regulations

How We Inspect

Our inspections can combine traditional and advanced methods:

  • Aerial Patrols: Fixed-wing aircraft equipped with a human observer fly over our pipeline routes to visually assess conditions. In some scenarios, drones are also used.
  • Ground Patrols: Field personnel conduct walking inspections in areas not accessible by aircraft or that require a closer review.
  • Advanced Technology: Aircraft equipped with Flyscan™ technology are used to enhance aerial patrols, performing with greater sensitivity and accuracy than human observers.

Flyscan Technology

MPL has invested in Flyscan Systems, Inc to modernize and enhance our approach to right-of-way inspections. From a patrol plane, the technology uses artificial intelligence and specialized sensors to scan the right of way for hydrocarbon leaks and mechanical equipment, performing with greater sensitivity and accuracy than the human eye. This system allows us to detect threats early and respond quickly.

Protect the Right of Way

We encourage landowners and residents to:

  • Keep the pipeline right of way clear of obstructions
  • Report suspicious activity, and signs of pipeline damage
  • Always contact 811 before digging
