Pipelines in Your Community

When there's a pipeline in your jurisdiction, you need heightened awareness and proactive engagement as we work together for community safety.

The 811 logo with its slogan "Know what's below Call before you dig."

Safe Project Planning

Never assume the location or depth of the pipeline. Always call 811 or submit an online request at call811.com  at least three working days before excavating or planning improvements to public spaces such as buildings, parks, roadways, or ditches.

Within 48 hours, an MPL employee will mark the pipeline location with paint and flags and perform a depth analysis so that the project can continue safely.

Public Engagement is a Best Practice

By engaging and communicating openly about pipeline construction and operations, we are reinforcing a culture of safety and working together to safeguard the community.

Common Ground Alliance President’s Award

Frequently Asked Questions

What is a pipeline right of way?

A pipeline right of way is a strip of land where a pipeline is located. These corridors are typically clear of trees, buildings, and other structures, and are marked with visible signage to indicate the presence of underground infrastructure. Maintaining these areas provides the ability to visually monitor threats to the pipeline and allows for quick emergency access.

How is the public alerted to the location of a pipeline?

Pipeline markers are located anywhere a pipeline meets a public access point, such as at a street, highway, or railway intersection, as well as on private land. These markers have important safety contact information, including the pipeline operator's name, emergency number, and the product it transports.

How does MPL respond to a pipeline leak?

Maintaining close contact with first responders enables us to control and remediate pipeline emergencies quickly. We strive to prevent all spills that impact people or the environment and to maintain the safety, integrity, and reliability of our operations at all times.
