Farming Near Pipelines

Farm drain tiles, irrigation systems and pipelines can be buried at similar depths, increasing the risk of pipeline damage. Farming accidents involving pipelines and utilities occur nearly three times every day.

Ready to Farm?

Never assume the location or depth of the pipeline. Always call 811 or submit an online request at call811.com at least three working days before drain tiling, chisel plowing, deep ripping/tilling, subsoiling, installing irrigation systems, or excavating.

Within 48 business hours, an MPL employee will mark the pipeline location with paint and flags and perform a depth analysis so that farming activities can continue safely.

Why 811 Matters

Three Seconds Later

Watch an award-winning documentary showing how lives can change in seconds after a tragic pipeline incident.

While this event did not involve a pipeline operated by MPL, we encourage all farmers and drain tile installers working near a right of way to watch the film and practice pipeline safety.

Drainage and Irrigation Systems

Tile drainage and irrigation systems are essential functions in agriculture to manage water and promote soil health.

To prevent a tile plow or other trencher from accidentally rupturing a buried pipeline, farmers need to contact 811 for pipeline location, depth and other safety information.

No matter the size of the farm or agricultural operation, we are ready to assist farmers who utilize drain tile and irrigation for their cropland in understanding pipeline safety.

Pipeline Depth

Erosion changes the depth of pipelines over time, making them more susceptible to damage caused by routine farming and excavating. It's important for farmers to contact 811, so we can locate and verify pipeline depth before digging.

We care about your safety. Don't take any chances.

Depth-of-Cover  Program

Through our Depth-of-Cover Program, we collaborate with farmers to explore mitigation plans to protect shallow pipelines in their tillable fields.

Conservation Agriculture Program

We work with farmers to transform shallow pipeline locations into sustainable habitats, which reduces the risk of pipeline damage while supporting healthier and more stable soil for the surrounding farmland.
