Emergency Preparedness and Response
Marathon Pipe Line LLC (MPL) is trained and prepared to respond safely and in a timely manner to any pipeline emergency.
Emergency Preparedness
Striving for zero incidents and deploying robust emergency plans, our primary concern is protecting the safety of the community, environment, and our employees.
Pipeline Safety Management
Pipelines are one of the safest ways to transport the nation's energy. Though we strive to prevent pipeline spills, we also recognize that they do happen and that we must be prepared.
Applying a multi-layered approach to pipeline safety, we stay prepared by undertaking the following measures:
Advanced Technologies
Utilizing state-of-the-art Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition (SCADA) Systems, MPL constantly monitors pipelines and checks for potential leaks. If a leak is detected, our Operations Center is immediately alerted to shut down the pipeline.
MPL employs aircraft equipped with Flyscan™ technology to enhance aerial inspections, increasing sensitivity and accuracy beyond human observer capabilities.
Response Plans
MPL's Emergency Preparedness Group develops and maintains Emergency Response Plans (OPA 90) that detail our response strategies.
Emergency Procedures
MPL personnel follow specific operational and response procedures in the event of an emergency to mitigate potential impacts to the public and the environment.
Training Exercises
MPL employees complete HAZWOPER training, so that they are prepared to respond quickly and effectively to protect the safety of themselves and the public.
Drills
MPL conducts tabletop drills and equipment deployment exercises to reinforce preparedness and continual improvement.

First Responders
If a pipeline event occurs, emergency response officials are immediately notified, and our operations personnel and contractors are dispatched to the site as quickly as possible. MPL will look to form a Unified Command with the local authority having jurisdiction to ensure all local concerns are addressed.
Response Coordination
MPL regularly communicates with local response agencies regarding pipelines in their community and conducts training sessions and drills to practice response protocols and coordination. Extensive response plans for our pipeline assets are based on the knowledge of personnel, available equipment, tools, and materials.
Tiered Response System
Tier 1
Incidents are directed by a local response team.
Tier 2
Incidents are directed by a district/regional response team.
Tier 3
Incidents are larger in scope and complexity and directed by our Corporate Emergency Response Team.

"Safety comes first at all times. We appreciate partnering with everyone in the community to promote safety practices that protect the public, property and the environment. By working together, we can reinforce a culture of safety and proactive engagement."
