Responsible Care®

Responsible Care® Logo

Responsible Care® is the chemical industry's commitment to the continual improvement of environmental, health, safety and security performance. It is our commitment to doing more to ensure the business of chemistry is safe, secure and sustainable. It is how we do business. As a Responsible Care company, MPL pledges to operate its business in accordance with the Responsible Care Guiding Principles.

Since 1988, companies participating in the program have:

  • reduced emissions 76 percent since 1988

  • reduced recordable injury and illness rates by 79 percent since 1990

  • reduced process safety incidents by 58 percent since 1995

MPL's parent company, Marathon Petroleum Company (MPC), was the first, and one of few petroleum companies, to adopt Responsible Care in 2000 as part of a partnership program between the National Petrochemical & Refiners Association (NPRA) and the American Chemical Council (ACC). MPL achieved third party certification of their management system to the Responsible Care 14001 technical specification in 2009, and recertifies to these criteria every three years.

Commitment to Excellence

The President's Award for Responsible Care® is MPC’s most distinguished award. It is presented annually to recognize excellence in health, environment, personal and process safety, security, product quality, diversity and business integrity. The winning organization is awarded an engraved crystal trophy, an award celebration ceremony and a $10,000 community outreach grant to be donated to a local non-profit organization of their choice. MPL was the first three-time winner of the award.
