More than seven years ago, then MPC Wellness Coordinator Tom Siebenaller put out a call for volunteers to serve as team captains for the American Heart Association’s (AHA) annual Heart Walk. MPL Project Manager Dale Peverly was among the first to volunteer, marking the start of the first-ever Pipeliners Heart Walk Team.
“Dale dedicated his fundraising efforts to his father, Bob, who had dealt with heart issues for many years,” notes Annette Peverly, Dale’s wife, an MPL analyst at Findlay and Heart Walk team captain. “Sadly, Bob passed away a couple of weeks before the Heart Walk was held.”
The loss of Dale’s father brought added meaning to the Peverly’s yearly participation in the Heart Walk, which is the AHA’s primary means for raising funds to fight heart disease and stroke. Yet another devastating loss in 2012 – Annette’s father, who had congestive heart failure – served to reinforce the Peverly’s efforts. “We feel strongly about raising money for the American Heart Association and making lifestyle changes that improve our overall health,” Annette notes.
The strength of the Peverly’s commitment and that of all other Pipeliners Heart Walk Team members shows. For the seventh straight year, the MPL team ranked No. 1 in fundraising. This year’s team, comprised of Jody Brown, Michael Busch, Jim Carpenter, Duane Heacock, Austin Jasin, Miriam Kuhn, Judy Nuzum, Javier Ramos, Tom Siebenaller, Theresa Thomas and the Peverlys, raised $7,127 in support of life-saving AHA initiatives.
Nearly $1,900 was raised at the team’s 5th annual Findlay garage sale alone. “Through the generosity of our friends at MPC, who provide items to sell, and that of the Findlay Moose Lodge, which annually donates the use of a room, we have been able to make this a successful yearly event,” says Annette who, at $1,664, ranked as the top individual Heart Walk fund raiser. It was money primarily raised through eggrolls Annette made and sold to friends and co-workers.
At 15 AHA Heart Walk teams overall, MPC also ranked as the top fundraising company, with the $30,000 raised for the event setting a new company record. “We were very excited to see more MPC employees getting involved this year, almost doubling past employee participation. The number of companies that participate continues to grow as well,” says Annette. “We are very proud of our fundraising efforts, and the increased participation can only mean more funds are going to this worthy cause each year.”
