Safe and Reliable Operations

At Marathon Pipe Line LLC (MPL), our vast network of pipelines, storage tanks and caverns, and marine facilities plays a critical role in connecting energy resources to refineries, terminals, and, ultimately, to the communities that rely on them.

Understanding Our Operations

MPL safely transports and stores crude oil, refined products, and natural gas throughout the continental United States and Alaska. We continuously meet or exceed state and federal regulatory requirements. By following our integrity management protocol, performing right-of-way inspections, using 24/7 computer monitoring in our operations centers, and conducting ongoing emergency preparedness and response training, we dedicate ourselves to the safety of the public and the environment on a daily basis.

Storage Tanks

We operate or provide oversight at four separate active liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) storage cavern facilities. Underground storage in caverns provides a safe method to store large volumes of LPG.

Marine Facilities

On the Mississippi River, we operate a marine facility with barge capabilities at Wood River, Illinois, enabling crude oil transport to the Gulf Coast for refining. In Los Angeles, our three marine terminals supply crude oil, refined products, renewable diesel, and other intermediates to Southern California. Two of these terminals load products for domestic and international distribution, with one offering “cold-ironing” capabilities for vessels to connect to shoreside power while docked.

Capline Pipeline

Proudly operated by MPL, Capline has been a critical part of America's energy infrastructure since 1968. As the energy landscape has changed over the past decade, Capline is now positioning itself for the next iteration of crude oil movements.
