There are over 2.5 million miles of underground energy pipelines in the United States transporting petroleum products (crude oil, gasoline, and diesel fuel), natural gas and other hazardous products. Pipelines are considered the safest and most efficient means of transporting energy products. But because pipelines cannot always be seen, people often do not think about the role they play in everyday life, or how farming activity, excavation projects or right-of-way encroachment can endanger pipelines and impact safety.
Most pipeline incidents can be prevented. Marathon Pipe Line LLC (MPL)’s Integrity Management Plan includes regular line inspections, maintenance activities, patrols and right-of-way clearing. Pipeline activity is monitored 24-hours a day, every day from MPL’s control center.
Individuals living and working near MPL’s pipelines can work together with MPL to help protect the line by always calling 811 before digging and by immediately notifying MPL of a potential pipeline leak, unauthorized excavation activity or right-of-way encroachment.
